Introduction

When talking about buying the most fashionable and cheapest clothes in Taipei, Wu Fen Pu is the place which almost everybody who lives in Taipei city will recommend.
Wu Fen Pu, located in front of the Song Shang train station, is a huge market which sells many kinds of clothes and accessories varied from Japenese, Korean, Chinese Idian style to American, Europe style. It provides clothes for both men, women, and even for dogs! Not only for retail sale, Wu Fen Pu is also a place for bulk sale. Every Monday, you can see lots of retail trader come here to purchase clothes for sale. If you would like to take a look at the biggest "mall" that has the greatest variety of things, Wu Fen Pu will definitely be the best choice for you. The only two disadvantage of Wu Fen Pu I can think of, is that sometimes there are stores selling illegal copies of brand name clothes, which is not allowed, ane the other one is that the clothes there usually can’t be tried on for customers.

Wu Fen Pu and I

I love shopping there for not only the reasonable price but also the big variety of clothes. It's lucky that I live very close to Wu Fen Pu so that I can go there for shopping twice a month on average. Among all the shops, the one I like most is the one called Fu-Li. Fu-Li is a shop which sells clothes of Japanese style. Though the price isn't that low among the area, the quality of the fabric is better than others', and the clothes there look better to me, too.

Traffic

Clue 1: It's close to MRT Hou Shan Pi Station

You can take a MRT train to Hou Shan Pi Station. You can leave the station by Exit 1 and walk north along Jhongpo N. Rd. to the intersection of Jhongpo N. Rd. and Yongji Rd.. Congradulation! Wufenpu is on the left and front.

Clue 2: It's by Songshan railway station

Take a train to Songshan station. It's one of the most important statitions in Taiwan, so every trains will stop here on the way. Leave the station by the south exit facing to Songlong Rd.. Well done! It's on the left and front again.

Clue 3: TGIBIS - a bus information system

We don't know which routes are convenient for you, however, Taipei city government has done a good job. You can check the bus information at Taipei bus and transportation information system: http://www.taipeibus.taipei.gov.tw/index_e.htm

Clue 4: Always another way

Don't forget you can always take a taxi!

Opening Times

A few things about the opening times in WuFenPu which you should know before you come to visit it.

1. Wufenpu is open for 7 days a week.

2. They don't have identical opening times, but mostly start business at around noon and close after mid-night.

3. They are available on Sunday but maybe close earlier after PM 9:00.

4. Monday is reserved for wholesalers, even though you still can go, but may not get services as good as usual.

Shi Lin Night Market

Shi Lin night market is one of the most famous night markets in Taiwan. It is located in TaipeiCity's ShiLinDistrict. My house is near this night market, so it's convenient for me to go shopping or find something good to eat there.

The traffic of this place is very convenient, too. You can take the bus or MRT and get off at Chientan Station. Besides, the market area is near many schools, so there is always crowded with people on weekends and even on weekdays. Actually, another reason why there are always full of people is that Shi Lin night market is a famous travel spot for foreigners, too.

Shi Lin night market can be divided into two parts. One is a large building where you can find all kinds of cheap and delicious food. If you want to try some traditional Taiwanese snacks, such as large pancake enfolding small pancake, hot pot on stone, and Shi Lin sausage, you can't miss this place. The other part is a large area and the center of the area is an old theater. The area includes many streets and vendors, some restaurants, and all kinds of shops, such as furniture, clothing, photo shops, and pet shops. Almost any product imaginable can be found there. The products are of good quality and quite inexpensive, so that you'll be satisfied to shop in this night market.

As a local, I'd like to introduce my favorite snack to you. Although the most famous fry chicken in Shi Lin is Hau Da fried chicken(豪大大雞排), it is not really very delicious for me. I prefer sweet juicy fried chicken(蜜酥雞排) which is to the left of the theater. It's not only very thick but also crisp. What's more, it even tastes a little sweet, and that is really special and yummy. I would be a pity if you come to Shi Lin night market without trying sweet juicy fried chicken.

In addition to all the shopping and food, Shi Lin Night Market also has movie theaters, video arcades and comic books store. There is a building called City Jungle near the market. It is a special place which has fortune-telling streets, cell phone streets, pet streets, KTV, and many other game machines. There is even a racetrack which you can play the kart in the basement of City Jungle.Or there is a bowling alley near Shi Lin night market that you can have fun with your friends. There are also the grounds of the art museum nearby available for a peaceful stroll. After your visit to the night market, you've had your fill of eating, drinking and shopping, you can head up to YangMingMountain to enjoy the night views and take a dip in the hot springs.

With so many choices available in dining, shopping and entertainment, there is no doubt that Shi Lin Night Market will continue to provide an endless supply of attractions and discoveries for all visitors, whether you're a veteran like me or a first-timer. So if you have the chance to visit Shi Lin, don’t forget to come to Shi Lin night market for an unforgettable journey.

Famous snacks in Tainan

Tainan is a city in the southern part of Taiwan and also the fourth largest in the country. Tainan, meaning ‘South Taiwan’ is home to a population of over one millionin habitants.This traditional city is supposed to have the most Buddhist temples in Taiwan and is regarded as one of Taiwan’s major cultural center. Established in 1624, Tainan is one of the oldest cities in Taiwan and is famous for its historic constructions and its delicious food.

Coffin bread is one of the famous snacks in Tainan. This snack was also known as jigan ban ( “chicken liver plank”). Basically it is a thick slice of white bread that has been hollowed out, stuffed with a mix of ingredients like fried tripe and seafood, and then covered with a thin slice of toast. The stuffing now usually consists of a thick seafood chowder with assorted vegetables. While the name of this snack might lead you to think that the ingredients could be dangerous to consume, it’s just the shape of the sandwich and its cover that gave it such a peculiar name.

Dandan noodles is also a classical snack that every visitor should have a try. Legend has it that there was once a poor fisherman who suffered from a lack of food. In order to help out with the family expenses, he started to sell small soup noodles. Luckily, the weather were too cold that people wanted to eat something hot on their way home. This new snack soon became popular. It also named as 29 day lunar month noodles. Eventually it became one of the well known snacks of Tainan as we see today.

There is a very interesting story about Oyster omelet. According to legend in 661A.D., the Holland army occupied Tainan, and Zheng Cheng-gong led rank-and-file soldiers to attack from Deer Orifice. He wanted to recover the lost territory, because Zheng`s Military suffered from a defeat of Holland Military. However, Holland Military got angry underneath. They hid all grain. Zheng‘s Military had quick wits in an emergency: they used local resources like local-produced Oyster, sweet potato powder mix with water to fry a round flat cake. Unexpectedly, it was handed down, becomes a very popular local flavor---Oyster omelet. Its secret lies in fresh Oyster and sweet potato powder: only when both of them are in perfect combination can make the taste of Oyster omelet.

With so many snacks and so little time to introduce all of the delicious food in Tainan,I could only choose some to talk about. Next time when you go to Tainan, don’t forget to try some local snacks; you will be surprised by how simple snacks can offer you huge joy and happiness.

Chiufen

Chiufen is one of the most popular tourist sites of northern Taiwan. It was said that long ago there were only nine families living in the village where all materials were transported via ships, so whenever one family goes grocery shopping at the market, what they bought would be divided it into nine pieces for each of the families. And the Chinese word nine pieces,“Chiufen” then becomes the village’s name.

Later, Chiufen becomes the center of gold mining, and that’s when lots of people moved in and made Chiufen prosperous. But after the gold runs out, Chiufen faded away soon. But several movies chose to shoot here and the movies won international acknowledgement and awakened people's memory of Chiufen.

Today Chiufen features all sorts of local snacks and unique accessory stores.

Chinese teahouses are also popular among both Taiwanese and Foreigners, and the beautiful ocean view of Keelung outer sea with its foggy weather condition that creates a romantic atmosphere also made Chiufen a great place of sightseeing.

I went on a trip to Chiufen with Kaohsiung and Pingtung association of NTNU on October 25^th. We visited the Gold Ecological Museum which presents the history of mining gold and the physical characteristic of gold. But the best of all is the snacks of Chiufen old street, I bought all kinds of desserts and local food such as Yu Yuan, Grass dumplings and Fish ball soup. I even bought some back to dorm to share with my

roommates!

Taipei Zhongshan Hall

Taipei Zhongshan Hall

When I was 14, I happened to have a chance to hold a concert with the Chinese Orchestra of our school in Zhongshan Hall. I was shocked by its beauty and solemnity at first sight. From then on, it has become the most attractive site in the Ximenting neighborhood for me. Besides going there for a walk in my free time, I usually go to there to attend concerts. Therefore, I really want to introduce Zhongshan Hall to the class and let everybody know how attractive it is.

If we walk along Yanping South Road in the Ximenting neighborhood of the Wanhua District, we will see a beautiful building located there, hidden in an alley. It is called Taipei Zhongshan Hall, one of the most famous historic spots in TaipeiCity.

The construction of Zhongshan Hall was started in 1932 and was completed in 1936. As a tribute to mark the ascension of the Japanese Emperor, the Japanese government, who was colonizing Taiwan, dismantled the former Ching Dynasty government office and built it as the Taipei City Hall. This four-story steel-structure was designed to be fire-resistant and to withstand severe quakes or typhoons. The main architect serving as a Chief Engineer put to good use the full cost of ￥980,000 and some 94,500 engineers and workers.

In 1945, in the celebration of recovering Taiwan after World War II,the Chief of Taiwan Provincial Administrative Office accepted a formal surrender from the Japanese Governor of Taiwan. After that, the former TaipeiCity Hall was renamed as Zhongshan Hall and became an official meeting place under the Chinese government. What’s more, it had been one of the most formal reception area for welcoming important foreign guests, including the former US president Richard Nixon, Korean President Lee Chen-Wine,and so on. It has also hosted some memorial ceremonies, such as the signing of the Sino-US Taiwan Mutua l Defense Treaty and the formal inauguration ceremonies of the president and Vice-President of the Republic of China.
Zhongshan Hall has been through the Japanese colonization over Taiwan, and has marked Taiwan's return to China over five decades of Imperial Japanese rule. As a consequence, the Internal Ministry Department has made Zhongshan Hall under the shield of Relics Protection Act as a major national cultural monument in 1992, reminding us these important historical events.

Now it functions as a a concert hall and one of the best places for the residents of TaipeiCity to take a walk to in holidays.

National Theater and Concert Halls

A spot in Taiwan that I will introduce to foreign visitors is The National Theater and Concert Halls(兩廳院), which is one of the most important spots and famous sightseeing places.

Where

The National Theater and Concert Halls are located in the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Park (中正紀念公園), if you face the great Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall , in the right way is the National Theater Hall by the Aiguo E. Rd., and in the left way is the National Concert Hall by the Xinyi Rd.

What’s special?

The National Theater Hall and National Concert Halls look like two great traditions of ancient Chinese Palaces. The roofs are paved with glazed tiles, and the tall colonnades are in bright, Chinese red. Their exterior appearances appropriately match that of the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall.
Some people always don’t know which one is the Concert Hall, and which one is the Theater Hall. Well, there is a tip---look at the roofs! The Theater Hall has a style of roof called “hip roof”, which is the highest class in traditional Chinese structures. And this style make the hall looks more noble and stable.
On the other side, the roof style of the Concert Hall is “gable and hip “, making the roof look like a mountain. Besides, it has two levels—a higher one and a lower one, so the Concert Hall looks more lively and energetic.

Their appearance look majestic, and their interior decorations look even more brilliant. The interior decorations are designed to be a blend of Chinese style with western style ingeniously. The ceiling was curved delicately into traditional Chinese patterns, while big, elegant crystal chandeliers sparkling from top. The paths are all covered with red carpet. Besides the two cream-colored marble stairs are the giant Chinese drum and the carved statue of ancient Chinese musician---showing the long Chinese history and culture. The concert hall has grand spaces; it totally has 2074 seats! And the biggest pipe organ (totally has 4712 pipes!) in Taiwan is also the special scene here. Last year (2007), the Concert Hall finished a special decoration--- “green wall”, lots of “living” plants grow on the wall, and are arranged into beautiful pictures, such as a shape of Taiwan on the wall! It’s really amazing and impressive. The Green Walls make the lobby look refreshed and makes this building look more modern. In contrast, the other side of the lobby’s wall is really old--- it is the first wet-fresco Masterpiece in Taiwan! All this gorgeous decorations make the National Theater and Concert Halls full of art-culture breathing!

History

The history of the National Theater and the National Concert Hall is as glamorous as the two buildings themselves. In 1975, ROC President Chiang Kai-Shek passed away. To commemorate him, the government decided to establish the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, the National Theater and the National Concert Hall. The Twin Halls were mainly designed by C.C.Yang, with a total construction cost of NT seven billion! The entire complex was christened the “NationalChiangKai-shekCulturalCenter”. When they were first built, few large arts complexes existed in Asia, and the Twin Halls truly aroused the attention of international arts circles.

How to get there

There are many bus stops around the buildings, like Routes 15, 18, 20, 22, 38, 70, 204, 274,275, 293 or 294. Get off at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall Station or at the Xinyi Lisin Intersection station. You can also take the MRT station. Exit Gate 5 of the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall Station, on the Xindian, Nanshijiao or Xiao Nanmen Lines. If you drive by yourself, don’t worry, there are parking places in the Basement 1.

Others

In my suggestion, you should take a one-day trip there. First, go visit the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall at about 9 or 10o’clock. This place is like a museum, and you will learn the history background at that time and Chiang Kai-shek’s life story. For lunch and dinner, you can go to Howard Gourmet Theater, which is located on the ground floor of the National Theater. After lunch, taking a walk with your friends and having a lovely picnic in its Chinese-style garden are the best choice. If you want to go shopping, there are many shops in the twin buildings, including NTCH Gift Shop and Eslite Bookstores Theater Live Store, etc. What’s more, you can make a reservation of “guide service” ,and a professional guider will lead you look around the Twin Halls with a detailed introduction. Finally, in the evening, you can go a concert and enjoy the bravo performance of NSO! It will be a well-arranged and wonderful day! :)

Walking into the graceful garden, you will see a beautiful white house there. It is SPOT-Taipei Film House.
SPOT-Taipei Film House is formerly the residency of the U.S. Ambassador, now a convenient place for serving as the cultural creative industry. It was constructed in1925 and then selected to be a historic spot by Taipei government in 1997. Later,it became the window of cross-cultural exchange and creative industry in 2002.
In SPOT, there are several sections: Spot Cinema, which screens the fine-selected movies from all over the world, City Lights Eslite Bookstore, C25 Coffee Shop, the exhibition gallery, the multi-media conference room, and the Sixth Avenue - the finest winery lounge.
SPOT cinema has six showing of films daily,from 12 A.M. to 12 P.M. The films shown here are mainly fine films with creative approaches and culture diversity. The effort is to enhance the independent thinking towards a new viewing experience and vision. Also, these films are artistically distinguished from the main-stream Hollywood films.
City Lights Eslite Bookstore is a theme bookstore which focuses on the cinema and the city, creating a unique reading experience for the readers, different from any other bookstore they have been before. It serves as the gateway between the past and the future, or the East and the West.
C25 Coffee Shop is originally the reception room of the Embassy. It faces the graceful and lush garden and serves as the relaxing place for visitors. Now that it was changed into the Cafe shop, it provides not only mellow and aromatic coffee but also a space for deliberation, creation, and meditation.
The exhibition gallery and the multi-media conference room provide a space for artists to show their work to people. Spot would invite experts from different fields to hold activities with the public to stimulate the cultural communication, and explore different points of view in creative thinking process.
Every time I walk into Spot, I feel relaxed to sit in the C25 Coffee Shop. The movies in Spot make me want to understand different cultures and make me see the world in diverse ways. Spot not only provides a good place to relax but also a wonderful place to make the public to introduce art to the public from different perspectives. Take a break in 228 Peace Memorial Park

Are you tired of the hustle and bustle in city? However, you always say that you don’t have any free time to relax yourself. You think you are too busy to spare time for outdoor activities. Even you might complain that it takes much time to arrive the destination. Then I strongly suggest you to visit 228 Peace Memorial Park, which is easy to go and full of harmonious scenes, such as children running around, squirrels jumping up and down in the trees or families playing badminton. You will find it indeed a retreat in the busy Taipei city.

Where

The 228 Peace Memorial Park is on No.3 KETAGALAN Boulevard Taipei, near by Zong Tong Fu, National Taiwan Hospital, and Taipei Railway Station. It’s located right in downtown; therefore, almost every road leads to there. It’s easy to go and visit.

What’s so special?

There are numerous valuable cultural relics, from under the rule of Chin Emperor to present days. You can appreciate all of these in one time. For instance, the National Taiwan Museum built by Japanese, the 1st steam locomotive “Teng-Yung”, gifts from Manchukuo---two copper buffaloes in front of the National Taiwan Museum, and of course, the 228 Memorial Monument!

Why do I choose the spot?

1.Located in downtown, therefore, almost every road leads to there. It’s easy to go and visit.

2.There are many valuable cultural relics. Such as governors from Chin Emperor, colony under Japanese, and the present government R.O.C. which “once ruled” or “rules” Taiwan left numerous famous period pieces. It can tell foreigners what country once ruled the island, which leads to cultural variety in the island. In addition, it can also narrate the history of Taiwan to them in a short time.

3.For my personal reason, the 228 Memorial Peace Park is brimful of my childhood memories. It is like a part of my home. On weekend, my parents always took my sisters and me to there to relax. Because the park is located in downtown, it’s easy for us to reach. Consequently, every time we are free, we choose to go there and take many pictures. Thus, my families have regarded the park as a part of our home since I was young. In addition, it has recorded my life in Taipei. If I have the chance to be a tour guide of Taipei, I’ll definitely opt for it.

The must-visiting spots

There are three spots visitors should take a look. The first place is National Taiwan Museum built by Japanese in 1908. It’s the first museum in Taiwan and even honored as "the place where modern knowledge started in Taiwan”. Before it became a museum, it used to be a temple of Mazu, a goodness protecting people sailing on sea. During the Japanese colonial period, the government devastated the temple despite protests from the residents, and then built the museum to commemorate two viceroys, Kodama Gentaro and Godo Shinhei. Thus, the museum is quite gorgeous in Baroque style. Moreover, there are two copper buffaloes beside the gate. Rumor has it that it was a gift from Manchukuo.

The second place is Taipei 228 Monument. The reason why the government constructed it was that the governmental officers wanted to soothe the family in the incident, and apologize to the community that they had overreacted to confiscate illegal cigarettes, which result in the tragedy of 228. The monument was built in 1997. There are many profound meanings in its outlook. For instance, the unit of the monument is cube, meaning the mistakes of 228 incident are caused by man----unnatural. The two palms on the monument suggest the deep agony from the family about the incident. The deafening waterfall inside symbolizes people of the incident warning posterities not to make the same mistakes again. The 228 incident is truly a sad story in this island. Also, if visitors want to know more about cause and effect of the incident, they can visit Taipei 228 Memorial Museum. There are many historical documents about the incident in it.

You would never visit 228 Peace Memorial Park without going to its playground, where I spent much time with my family and took the most pictures! On the way, there are plenty of trees on the sidewalk. Sometimes you will find squirrels jumping between trees and climb down wondering if you bring some special snacks for them. You will see how lovely they are! On holidays, the playground is full of children’s laughter. The slides and swings are the hottest entertainment facilities. Old as it looks, many children like it very much. When I was little, I liked the swing the most. Feeling the warm wind passing by my hair, and laughing joyfully, I felt my vexation going with the wind. Nowadays, every time I walk by the slides and the swings, I think of my lightheartedness in my childhood. Their cute and innocent actions really delight me, for the joy and smiles are contagious.

Taichung Park

As we think about Taichung city, several things might come to your mind, such as feng- chia night market(逢甲夜市)、Taichung harbor(台中港)、tai-yang-bing(太陽餅),etc. But Among those famous specialties and places, Taichung Park is to me the most worthwhile place to be introduced to the visitors who are planning to take a trip to Taichung. The reason why I think it’s the most worthwhile place to visit is that Taichung Park includes many historical monuments which were built during the Japanese colonization and many modern facilities such as playground and tennis court for citizens to exercise and spend their leisure time. Most of all, hu-shin-ting(湖心亭) which located inside the Taichung park is the symbol of the Taichung city. For the intriguing things I introduce above, one’s trip to Taichung won’t be completed without visiting it!
First, I would like to introduce the history of the Taichung Park. About one hundred years ago, in considering of the governing, Liou Ming Chuan(劉銘傳)chose Taichung as the capital for its central location. It was called Taiwan sheng cheng (台灣省城).Until now there is still a remnant of the ancient city in the park.
After that, during the period of Japanese colonization, Japanese torn down the city built by Liou and rebuilt a well-organized one. That is the model of the modern Taichung city. During this period, Japanese also built a park in the northern part of the city in order to provide a place for the citizens to take a rest and go exercise. And the park is now the Taichung Park.
In October, 24, 1908, to celebrate the completed construction of the rail, Japanese government held a ceremony in the Taichung Park. And hu- shin ting (湖心亭)was built to provide a place for Japanese royalty and gusts to relax.
With red tiles and white walls, the tower-combined building looks extremely elegant with the surrounding lake and trees. From then on, hu- shin ting (湖心亭)not only became one of the most beautiful places in the Taichung city but also the symbol of Taichung.
Taichung Park is the treasure of every Taichung citizen, and it is also a shared memory of Taichung people . For over one hundred years, even after several restructuring and repair schemes, Taichung Park stands proudly and telling everyone the history of Taichung city.
Taichung Park is near the Taichung train station where once the most prosperous part of the city was. From Taichung train station, you can go there by taking a bus in about 10 minutes or by walk in 15~20 minutes. It is really convenient to go to Taichung Park, so don’t forget to go there when you have a trip to Taichung.

Kaohsiung—─Love River

The name of Love River originates from the native people who lived near the river; they called it “Takao River” in their language. While the Japanese governed Taiwan, they changed the name into ”Kaohsiung River.” After a correspondent reported that a couple committed suicide at the “Love river”, the name ”Love River” had spread widely, and this story has being handed down by the elders. Love River has come to being since the Ming Dynasty and the square measure is about 150 square kilometer. It is a river that won’t be lack of water even during the dry season. Since the 1990s, the water quality has become better and better. There are also many species in the river.

There are many activities held at the Love River to celebrate the festivities. During the Dragon Boat Festival, you can row the dragon boat at Love River, and have a taste of rice dumpling. You can also join in the Lantern Festival. It is a festival for people having fun. On the night of the festival, people go on streets with a variety of lanterns under the full moon, play Chinese riddles and games, and lit up fireworks. It’s sparkling when you see the reflections of fireworks booming at Love River, and you’ll never forget about it!

Beside the bank of Love River, there’s the urban spotlight. You can have a rest here whenever you feel tired. The aroma of the fresh coffee always gives me a feeling of bliss. Sipping the coffee and listening to the musical performers, you can feel peaceful deep inside your heart, and enjoy the gentle touches of sunshine and the breeze.

You can also go bicycle-riding along Love River, there are special bike ways planned by the government. If you like to get close to the nature, you can just lie down on the grass and look at the blue sky or the shining stars. It’s a romantic place with a charming name, a place with great atmosphere, and a place to get together with friends.

Jigu Study

The function of the Jigu Study is used to collect books and to study. From the exterior, the Jigu Study looks like a building with three sections and a pavilion. Jigu Study has doors in the front and the back to facilitate ventilation and passing.

The main structure of the Jigu Study was originally built with a plane roof and the roof was changed into the current arch style during the Japanese colonization period. Functioned as a library, the design of its windows is simple but graceful.

Lai-ching Hall

The Lai-ching Hall was used to entertain the honorable guests in the old times. Going up the Lai-ching Hall and looking far away, you can see the green scenery of the Mt. Datuen and Kuanyin. What comes to you is a vast expense of green scenery. That's why it is named “Lai-ching” in Chinese. It means the arrival of the green. It is the most luxurious building in the garden.

There are gardens on the two sides of the building, separated by the flower wall. On the wall, there are carved windows in graceful styles with profound meanings. In front of the building is a performing stage where the theater performers were invited to entertain the guests in the theater the old times.

Banyon Shade Pond

It is a huge pond surrounded by different shapes of the pavilions in triangle, square, diamond, octagon and circle. The pavilions are served as places for taking a rest and seeing distant views in the middle of the touring route along the pond in the garden and they are also spotlights for visiting.

The vivid atmosphere of the Banyan Shade Pond mainly comes from the banyan. Its big shadow, open space, and pond at a large size create a pleasant air in this place. Such design makes the garden more comfortable and abundant in local color atmosphere inside.

A Date with Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall

In April, 1975, the President Chiang Kai-shek passed away. In response to suggestions from all sectors, the funeral committee members decided to build the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, which I would like to introduce now, in order to commemorate the late president.

If this is your first time to visit to Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, you may be surprised at the spectacular buildings and the design of Chinese style. Actually we can focus on three points about the designing ideas of the memorial hall. The first one expresses the spirit of Chinese traditional culture. The second one is the emphasis on creative, sublime and unique style. And the last is the usage of the modern technology and the focus on economical and useful way. It is a really amazing spot that you can go to appreciate of Chinese culture and the atmosphere of the age.

Dividing the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall into many parts, we can see the main building, which has the impressive roof and many display rooms; the beautiful garden, where you can enjoy the peaceful landscape and take a walk on the little bridge. We can also see the square, the National Opera House, and the National Concert Hall inside.

Needless to say, the appearance is magnificent. The archway entrance is 30 meters high and 80 meters wide. Viewing the Hall from the Central Arch, visitors cannot help being awed by its grandeur. And there are two side entrances, which also has the special design, located at the road close to the archway entrance.

Maybe you would wonder, why did the architects build the memorial in this shape? What was the designing idea? What has been the meaning of this design? The answers are as below.

First, the Memorial Hall was established on three foundations with square platform. It is a symbol of “upright and honest”, which is the literal meaning of Chung-Jen, Chiang Kai-shek’s another name. You can see the eight-square and the “human” shape of colored glazes, numerous piles to the top of the roof. And the roof was made of sapphire glass. The wall of white marbles and the red “ru yi” pattern of Chinese blanket represent the spirit of Blue Sky, White Sun and Red Ground (freedom, equality and universal fraternity).

After knowing the brief history, the structure and the meaning of memorial hall, you may want to know what you can do in it. If you want to have an intellectual trip, you can visit the display rooms and have a guide to introduce the historic stuff in detailed. If you want to have some leisure time in it, you can just take a walk around it, or walk through the park, greeting the flowers and birds in the garden if you are fortunate enough. LITTLE SHOPS IN EAST DISTRICT

Tired of shopping in the huge department store not knowing what to buy? Sick of walking on the street bumping into someone who is just wearing the same clothes as you are? Don't worry! Little shops in the East District are good choices to dress you up. Take the Mass Rapid Transportation and get off at the Zhong Xiao Dun Hua station. Little shops are hidden in the alleys.

Why do we call "little shops" ? The reason is that the shops are usually one third of an average shop. They are quite small but each shop is like a delicate museum. Managers decorate their shops according to what the sell: American punk, pop, Japanese style, Bohemia, and so on. Also, everything can be used as decorations: America flags, Korea fans, Japanese dolls, or lollipops put into a cake. It doesn't need to spend a lot of money embellishing a shop, even the wood found beside rivers, shells, or pebble stones can be one of the decorations.

Actually, clothes and accessories there are not cheap at all. However, why do I like it? I think the reason is that every little shop is unique. The managers usually go abroad themselves once a month to pick up the most "in" products with the best design, texture, etc.. They stick to what they really love, and the spend so much time understanding the products. So, of course, they can choose the best ones. They run their shops by hearts and build up their honor. We can totally trust them, sparing our free time shopping there comfortably. Though the product is not usually cheap, it is definitely worth it.

As for me, I like Japanese style better, for we Asian girls have similar shapes. Here going to introduce to everybody my favorite ones.

First of all, Lillian. Going in there is like that you are already in Tokyo! Used fresh, bright decorations, a place where you can totally relax. Try the clothe on, and I am going to be a super star!

Second, CHICHI, which is own by a beautiful, young lady who likes Korean dramas very much at first. She said, “It’s is a trade. We may learn from TV shows to imitate how the actresses wear. Like we seem to like Japanese style few years ago, and now it’s time for Korean style.” She goes to Korea once a month to bring back the clothes and accessories. She describes Korea where she buys all these lovely a 24 hours never sleep town. The hardships she faced during purchasing are that the Korean people are not easy to bargain with. Well, we may ask that she go there alone not knowing a word. How could she bargain? Actually, simple English conversation is just enough. The other difficulty is that they don’t like to sell only one or two pieces; they tend to sell to the cooperated department stores because they can get much higher taxes and that’s also the reason why in the little shops you can spend less money than you buy in the department stores. She also decorated the shop by herself. We can tell that it’s a cozy place where we can slow down our fast paces in this hustle, bustle city.

Third, CYPHER. The owner is also the designer! Every dress in the shop is the only one in the whole world. While some may differ from colors or textures, it’s still very unique. She majored in design and also, her mother said proudly, “She once worked in a very famous dress designing company to learn from the basics and then she studied abroad in order to get into another level.” She wants to make something different from those already in the market. For now, she wants to make something not too girlish and add some punk element. About a month, she’ll find a photographer to take pictures for all the new designs and make into postcards. At last, I ask her about the inspiration which I think is the hardest part. She said, “It’s a “feel” and when it comes, you’ll know it.” Alright, I think she got the genes!

Taipei East District is like a big amusement park where we can find amazing matters on every corner.

Fusing Township

Fusing township, which locates in the southeast of Taoyuan County, is one of the most beautiful mountain areas in Taiwan. One can feel a sense of being recharged after spending time amongst the rich wildlife plants. Because of the preservation by local government, we can say it is a paradise for people who live in Taoyuan.

Even the bus trip is already wonderful in itself. From level ground to the mountain area, you can easily tell the differences in temperatures and sceneries. As mists gradually fade off, the sun becomes warm and comfortable. If you were lucky enough , monkeys and squirrels may popped just in front of your eyes! A conversation with the local people is also warm, since they talk about their life in interesting accent and with enthusiasm.

Because of the immigrants from china, aboriginals in Taiwan were forced to move up to the mountain areas. In Fusing Township, most of the residents are Atayal, which is one tribe of aborigines in Taiwan. The most distinguished feature of them is the face tattoo, which signifies that they have already grown up and have the ability to be responsible for him or her self. The government also set up a historical and cultural center for people to have in-depth understanding about their way of life. Because most of the people there are so passionate and enthusiastic that visitors love to visit there again and again.

To have some souvenirs for friends, you should go to the Jaobasan (Mt. Jaoban) shopping district. In this shopping district you can see lots of unique hand-made stuff like clothes, bags, and their famous special products. One of the popular products in Fusing Township is the fleshy and juicy peaches. People say that once you have tasted the peach from Mt.Lala (one of the mountains in Fusing), you will never forget it!

After strolling there for a day, you can give the Fusing Youth Activity Center a try. It is a place which merges with the natural scene perfectly, and it is where people can really have a nice sleep. In the morning, the lovely birds’ songs will replace the noisy alarm clock and lightly wakes you up!

In my experience, I think it is a place suitable for good friends to spend about two days there. Only one thing need to remember: there’s no need to bring your camera, because I’m sure your first visit won’t be the last one!

Historical downtown of Hsinchuang

There is a special place inside Taipei county, where a lot of historical sites and customs are conserved, and also kindness from people can be found everywhere. It is so is Hsinchuang, especially in a street that named the historical downtown of Hsinchuang. You can take bus to Hsinchuang stop or take MRT to jiang zi cui station, then transfer to bus 802 and get off at Hsinchuang stop.

The oldest store inside Hsinchuang could date back to the year 1736, when historical downtown of Hsinchuang had been named. Many other stores such as the “you jia” dried bean curd store, “xiang ren he” handmade drum, and “lao shun xiang” cake factory in Hsinchuang now are not only famous just for their history (some of them have even opened since the Tongzhi period of Ching dynast), but also good quality that never changed.

You jia ’s bean curd have been kept the traditional flavor since it opened, and every process have been followed under their traditional rules, especially the way they end it – baking. If you are planning to come to the store, the best time is 7 to 8 p.m.

Others like lao shun xiang’s cake factory, which is not only produces delicious traditional cake, but also stands a very important position. It is because this factory is the only one in Hsinchuang which still provide a special donut - a kind of bread called xian guang bing, which is made for Hsinchuang’s temple fair every May in Chinese calendar. They are for special characters called "Eight general” during this fair, and meant to be hung like necklaces on those “Eight general” so that the viewers by the road can grab it as a meaning of luck. Another reason for its importance is that since xian guang bing is a very traditional food, few young people are willing to learn to make it, cause it become more precious than before. 　

Furthermore, Hsinchuang has the most temples gathered in one area, such as ci you temple, di cang an ( da zhong temple ), wu sheng temple, bao yuan palace, guang fu palace ( san shan king’s palace ), wen chang shrine , quan an palace… ect.

Comparing to Western religion, we don’t have only one god but many of them because each one is special. For examples, ci you temple hosts St. Mother of heaven, who takes care of people’s safety and controls the weather. Others like bao yuan palace, guan fu palace, quan an palace are in charged of chores and provide protection for people who live near them.

But the most special temples to me are di cang an and wen chang shrine. Although di cang an has been told to be a yin temple since they hosts some people who died in an electrical fighting in Hsinchuang in the early years. However, the Ksitigarbha and those who died for the fighting inside these temple bless almost everything about losing stuff, bad mood or people’s health, and it works! Therefore it has its own temple fair which is one of the biggest fairs in Taiwan.

Wen chang shrine is in charge of people’s luck for exams. People usually take green onion, celery, Chinese pastry to warship god and then ate them, because the names of the foods sound like smart, diligent, high score in Chinese. Every year around exam season, the whole shrine would be filled with crowds!

The density of temples in this area makes “xiang ren he” handmade drum so necessary here. This store has been holding its good reputation and great quality for over one century. Every part of each drum’s connection is stitched by one master, and then sold to temples in order to provide instruments for temple staff to perform a special show in temple’s fair.

Now let’s talk about Hsinchuang temple’s fair. It is hold in every May first in Chinese calendar to prey for folks’ peaceful life, and this fair has considered as the biggest temple fair in Taiwan; the whole process includes the night visits and daytime patrols.

The night time visit takes place in the afternoon before May first in Chinese calendar, meaning to invite every temple’s host god to look around Hsinchuang, and scare those bad spirits away. And there will also be some traditional show of Taiwanese temples during this night time visit such as Eight General and fireworks.

The daytime patrols is on May first, which is the day when guan jiang shou comes out to stay with Ksitigarbha and every other god that host their temple to patrols Hsinchuang area in order to celebrate Ksitigarbha’s birthday, and also make this area peaceful.

Guan jiang shou is a kind of a ceremony to appreciate god’s efforts, usually composed with 3 to 15 people in odds. Our di cang an in Hsinchuang is the original one, meaning to get bad spirit away and make folks safe. Its colorful decoration and the way they act is the biggest feature.

If you are planning to come here to participate in this fair, remember to bring a large volume memory disk with your camera so that you don’t miss any great pictures, and also a pair of good shoes for you might walk for a long distance.

Juming Museum

In the mountain near the northern coast in Chin-Shan, TaipeiCounty , there is a special museum which is totally integrated with the nature, JumingMuseum . The following statements will show you the characteristic and features of JumingMuseum .

Once you step in, you will have an all new feeling, because it doesn’t match the impression of a museum we have in mind. Instead, it’s just like a park. The fresh air in the mountain and the broad environment will absolutely help us release the stress we have. The founder of the museum, Ju Ming, is one of the greatest artists in Taiwan. He has learned the art of sculpture since he was a child. Therefore, he is good at sculpturing no matter what the material is. He devotes most of his time to the artist works. The famous works of Ju Ming are Living World series and Tachi series. The Tachi series focus on the firm structure of each sculpture, which contain the spirit of Chinese culture.

At Juming museum, there is no distance between people and the works. You can appreciate the work closely to interpret the idea that the artists want to convey. What’s more, you can also take photos with those works. It is a place for people to interact with artistic works.

In addition to some fixed exhibitions, there are also seasonal displays of other artists. Recently, there has been a new exhibition which is called “The Artistic Gallery”. It is a gallery about 200meters long, which provides spaces for art enthusiast to show their originalities. Every artist has to spend a lot of time fulfilling their works on the wall. Sometimes, they have to fight against the height and the weather. One of the artistic creations is the work of my English teacher in senior high school. The idea of her work is based on our dreams. Once in the class, she asked us to write down our dreams after entering university on a handout. To our surprise, she turned our dreams into a significant wall-painting this summer. The moment we got the news and saw that painting ourselves, we were all moved to tears. For us, it not only represents the wonderful memory that we all have, but encourages us to put our noses to the grindstone to make those dreams come true.

What’s more, Juming museum also provides some drawing spaces for children to enjoy the fun of art. They can draw on the windows with colorful chalks, or draw on the wall with water. Children can draw to their hearts’ content as if they are wonderful artists. There are also some art activities provided for children irregularly. It is a great place for parents to go with their children.

Paying a visit to an art museum is another way to broaden our horizons, because we can not only learn something about art, but also get some new ideas toward life by appreciating the meaning of the art works. Visiting JumingMuseum really changes my thought about art and museum. I learn that there is no limit of art. After visiting this museum, I realized that even if I am not good at painting, I should also develop a notion to appreciate art. Everything around us has something to do with art. It is something magical that adds spice to our life. The world will be colorless without artistic elements.

All in all, it is such a great place for people from all walks of life to free themselves from the monotonous living. It is worthwhile to spend a whole day in JumingMuseum engaging in arts activities, which can soothe the body, elevate the mind and instill a positive outlook on life. Shezi Peninsula－A Contrasting Rural Area in Taipei City

●Discovery
One day, when I was looking at a map of Taipei City, I found a place which is very flat and surrounded by two rivers. This place is Shezi Peninsula(社子島). I was curious about it and, in addition, I like to travel around Taipei at my leisure to observe and understand more about the city I live in. Therefore, I decided to go there by bus and take a look. As a result, I was surprised that there is such a rural landscape in Taipei City. I really enjoyed the natural scenery and the calm atmosphere. That’s why I chose Shezi as my topic.

●Description
The Shezi Peninsula is located in the Shilin District(士林區), the northwest part of Taipei City. In Chinese, local people are still used to calling it “Shezi Island,” since it was truly an island several decades ago, but it becomes a peninsula now. Here, at the end of the peninsula, the Keelung River(基隆河) flows into the Danshui River(淡水河). Therefore, there’s an ecological area full of mangrove and wild birds. For those who love nature, this underdeveloped area is definitely a good place to visit.

●Background
Because Shezi Peninsula is surrounded by two rivers, and the ground is very flat, it is a place where rivers may flow through and floods may occurs very frequently. As a result, this area is underdeveloped, and a huge part of the land is for agricultural use. That’s why we have such country-like scenery in the busy Taipei City.
In the recent years, the dikes along the riversides have been built up. This is the reason why Shezi turned into a peninsula from an island. Consequently, floods are not that frequent anymore. Some small communities and small factories emerged. This area starts to develop gradually.

●Attractions
If you go by bus, after the bus arrives at the terminal stop, you can walk for a while to reach the dike. Climb up, and the beautiful natural scenery comes into sight. We can see the exact end of the Shezi Peninsula, the converging point of the two rivers, and a huge mangrove protected wetland, where is a habitat for many birds. Across the Keelung River is the Guandu(關渡) area of Taipei City. Across the Danshui River is Wugu Township and Lujhou City(五股鄉、蘆洲市) of Taipei County. If we look around, the bright red Guandu Bridge(關渡大橋), the magnificent Guandu Temple(關渡宮), the high-standing Beitou Incineration Plant(北投焚化爐), and the misty Yangming Mountain(陽明山) all come into sight. In addition, outside the dike, a plaza was built. It’s quite a good place to go in leisure time.
Another attraction is on the way to come. The major road leading to Shezi is the Yanping North Road(延平北路), from section 6 to section 9. But after section 7, the road narrows a lot, and the houses look low and antique. I could feel that I am in a rural countryside, but actually I’m still in Taipei City. It’s quite an interesting contrast!

●Cycling
Since buses run fast, and we can’t randomly stop it, another recommended way to discover Shezi is to ride a bike. There’s a riverside bicycle trail around the whole peninsula. We can choose to ride on the right bank of Danshui River, or the left bank of Keelung River. The two rivers bring you two different views. It’s very comfortable to feel the breeze as you ride along the riverside to admire the beautiful scenery. The bicycle trail stretches all the way to the city center. If you ride along it, you can experience the different atmosphere of rural area and urban area.

●Transportation
The most convenient and easiest way to get to Shezi is to take bus Red 10 from MRT Jiantan Station(劍潭站), till the terminal stop: Taipei College of Maritime Technology(台北海院). It takes about 30 minutes. There’s no specific parking lot and the road is quite narrow, so suggested ways to get there are by bus, by bike, or by scooter. Especially by bike, you can also ride along the bicycle trails, enjoying different views.

●Evaluation
At the first time I visited Shezi, I was impressed by its rural scenery: the low, ancient-looking houses, and the narrow road. The natural scenery, including rivers, mountains, and mangrove, is also very beautiful. It’s quite difficult to find such a rural area in the hustle and bustle Taipei City nowadays. It has been kept underdeveloped, so if you want to experience the rural atmosphere just in Taipei City, Shezi is a good place. Taipei is a special basin with both mountains and rivers surrounding it. For leisure, besides going to the mountains, the river view of Shezi is another choice. After busy weekdays, get a bike and enjoy the slow and natural atmosphere through a comfortable cycling!

Lehua Night Market---Body and Soul Contentment

Every night, you can see vendors all gathering there and start selling their products. There are a lot of local cuisines: juicy fried chicken, spareribs stewed in herbal soup, oyster omelet, meatball, soy-sauce flavored delicacies, etc. Of course, Lehua Night Market also offers some exotic foods, including Japanese sushi, Turkish Doner Kebab, Thai green papaya salad, Korean seafood pajun, and many other kinds of foreign specialties. Among those mentioned above, I prefer juice fried chicken, for it has crispy skin and juice meat with crazy sweet smell. Once you bite, you can’t stop. Near the entrance of the night market, there is a famous chicken stand. There is always a long line in front of it. It is really yummy. What`s more, you can also shop for clothes, shoes, DVDs even bags at a low price. That is, it meets your requirements in many aspects.
When I was little, I once got lost in the night market. I just wandered around but did not know what to do. I didn`t feel panic. However, many shop keepers came and asked me. They gave me some sweets and tried to help me find my parents. In the end, they realized that I came to the night market by myself when I finally saw the familiar food stand and ordered some takeout. Well, I did get lost, but some stores can show me the way home.
There are many benefits to live near night market. For one thing, you will never need to think hard where to show your guests around. The night market is a good place to discover Taiwanese culture. For another, no matter how late you stay up, you can always get some yummy food to keep you awake.
Night market itself is a unique culture for Taiwanese, while Lehua night market is a famous tourist spot in Yonghe. It shows people’s night life. Take a walk here, and you might discover some wonderful stuff which you can buy only here. Next time when you visit Yonghe, don’t forget to enjoy yourself with food and cheap but good products in Lehua night market.

The restaurant is located in Da-an District, Taipei City. It’s Near the Gongguan commerce district. The nearest landmark there is National Taiwan University Stadium. You can go there by MRT (get off at the Gongguan Station) or by bus (get off at Civil Service Development Institute Station). There is also a branch store of the restaurant at Guangfu N. Road.

§What is so special about it?
Taida Beef Noodles enrolled in Taipei Beef Noodles Festival (2006) and got an excellent appraisal of five stars.

Taida Beef Noodles is very different from those similar-property restaurants today in Taiwan. First of all, the owner of the Taida Beef Noodles only uses flesh of cattle instead of buffalo, so that beef becomes more succulent and sweeter and the soup stewed by cattle’s bones are tasty to eat. By the way, the soup offered here is stewed(清燉), not braised in soy sauce(紅燒). Secondly, there are a lot of palatable dishes(小菜) for customers to choose. There are also variable meals more than beef noodles for customer to order, like Zajian noodles(炸醬麵) and chicken legs noodles, just name a few. The owner of the restaurant is a generous, talkative and nice person. He always treats customers as his friends.

The first time I dines there was about three years ago, when my family and I were looking for a new restaurant to have dinner. Consequently, we became frequent costumers of there. The space of Taida Beef Noodles is not big, but the decoration there is very elegant and clean, just like a friend’s house. The foods there are also dainty. On weekends, you can see lines of visitors waited out restaurant for only one meal. That shows how popular and famous Taida Beef Noodles is.

Here are some dishes that I recommend that you have to order or you’ll regret:

(A)Beef Noodles (NT120)
It is the most famous meal, and also stands as the sign of the restaurant. The soup is not greasy. The beef tastes savory. The combination between the smell of soup and green onion creates a unique taste. By the way, you can ask for a larger amount of noodles, all sorts of noodles included, without paying extra money!

(B)Beef Noodles with Tendon (NT130)
This is my favorite dish. The beef shank is so chewy and delicious! It is more appropriate for elders to choose this meal instead of normal beef noodles because the beef with tendon are easier to chew.

(C)potato salad(涼拌洋芋絲)(NT30)
It’s a very special dish. I’ve never seen any restaurant deal with potatoes this way. Potatoes are cut into the shape like silk. It’s refreshing that you will want to eat it plate after plate!

(D)boiled cabbage(燙青菜)(NT30)
Though this dish looks usual, I still want to recommend it to all of you, for it tastes different from other restaurants’ boiled cabbage. I think it is because of its special sauce invented by the chef.

(E)soybeans salad(黃豆芽)(NT30)

It is my favorite side dish. The chef adds a lot of sesame oil and black pepper, which make this soybean salad taste spicy and tense. If you like strong-flavor food, this plain dish is a good choice for you.

§How does the restaurant relate to Taiwanese culture?

Beef noodles can count as an important and characteristic part in Taiwanese cooking culture. I think Taida Beef Noodle added so many innovations to traditional cultures and it also developed new kinds of beef noodles that are suitable for modern people.

§My evaluation

Taida Beef Noodles is a great restaurant in my own opinion. Each of the dishes has a fair price, but you can feel satisfied and enjoy dishes of such high quality without paying as much money as in luxurious restaurants. If you have time or want to try something different, why don’t you just come to Taida Beef Noodles and have a bowl of wonderful beef noodles? : )

Having FUN in TAINAN 心輔101 曾昱涵 Peculiar

Want to have some fun? Desire delicate but low-price food? Hope to visit a place that has something besides only passing by and see? All your desire could be satisfied in TAINAN! Please follow my narration, then you’ll be led to the most gorgeous wonderland that you’ve never been to.

One would regret if he didn’t visit some historical sites before he leaves Tainan. Because Tainan is the first capital of Taiwan, 2 hundred years ago, it is rich in history and traditional culture. That’s why the number of historical sites is almost as large as the number of convenient stores in Tainan. Um, I’m not kidding! It’s totally a truth that you’ll find out at the capital of culture ── Tainan.

If you want to take a look at the oldest school in Taiwan, please come to Tainan Confucius Temple(孔廟) to explore the combination of traditional campus and the temple which honors the most distinguished educationist in Asia. You can also dip yourself into the scene of the building’s old elegance and the fresh-green trees swaying with the gentle wind.

If you want to know about the Netherlander’s activity in 17C, An-Ping Fort(安平古堡) and Chih-Kan Tower (赤崁樓)are the greatest choice for visiting. Every part of the buildings has their own stories. What’s more, some buildings are mixed up with the Chinese and western elements. Besides, there is a marvelous An-Ping Tree House(安平樹屋) near by An-ping Fort----the miracle of Nature should be gasped with admiration by yourself personally.

In addition to these historical sites, there’re still COUNTLESS glamorous sites waiting for your arrival. Such as National Museum of Taiwan Literature(國家台灣文學館), the past city hall of Tainan City. Now it is not only a museum for literature, but also a multi-function place which let art and culture to interact with the public. Although the museum only displays pieces about Taiwan literature, the exterior look of it is worthy to spend a gaze as well. The Mansard-style roof and Onion Dome make a great cooperation with the staid red-and-white wall. What’s more, a row of Coconut Palms joined the above-mentioned elements, producing a breathtaking scene.

Speaking of art and breathtaking scenery, I would like to introduce a place deserves your lingering away a whole NIGHT. It is Hai-An Art Road. (海安路藝術造街) that made so many visitors forget the time and stay there until midnight. Hai-An Road was planned to be an under-ground commercial area 10 years ago. However, the plan was forced to stop because of the lack of fund. That’s why Hai-An Road had not had any visitor until some artists contributed to develop this area, solving the dilemma of its developing. Now, Hai-An Art Road is a site which has not only art and surprise, but also history and communal appearance----the old and the new on the same street, making an unforgettable scene for all the visitors.

As you enjoy these famous sites in Tainan, I bet your stomach must also in search of something good----don’t worry about it, because all the tasty food is always waiting for you. People in Tainan usually pay as much attention as they can to what they eat every day, and that’s why Tainan is also called “the capital of food”.

The first one I would like to introduce is Guan-Tsai-Ban(棺材板), a special snack stemmed from Tainan. I can almost be sure that you’ve never know any food like this. Crispy and hollow toast with thick soup----which was made of onion, bean, carrot, squid, milk, and flour----inside, creating a fresh and unique flavor that cheers your bud.

After the snack, are you thirsty for drink? If the answer is yes, you should try some traditional drink in Tainan, such as Kuo's Mung Bean Soup(郭家綠豆湯) and Yi-Fong Winter Melon Tea(義豐冬瓜茶). The old cooking method from hundred years ago keeps the local flavor lasted from past to now.

It is possible that all things above could not satisfy your unfilled stomach. Yet that’s not the problem, for there are some place for you to have a plentiful meal (recommend for lunch, but why? Ha-ha, I’ll tell you later.) For example, Chou's Shrimp Rolls(周氏蝦捲) is always the first choice for me every time I go to An-Ping. After the fresh shrimps ─which is wrapped up in flour─is fried with pork, fish ground into liquid, celery, and green onion in the oil, a crispy golden shrimp rolls seems to be inviting us to experience its deliciousness.

In addition, if you want some light food for lunch, you can’t miss Jin-de Spring Roll(金得春捲). It is a kind of Chinese food which is made with a piece of outer layer wrapping some cooked food in it, including cut-into-piece pork, vegetable in season, fried egg, shrimp, peanut powder, garlic, dried bean curds, and emperor bean. After all the ingredients are rolled up, it will be fried in the pot for a while in order to take off the unnecessary water in the spring roll, and provide a light and fresh taste for us.

Although I’ve presented so many mouth-watering dishes for you, there are still numerous kinds of food in Tainan that you should taste. However, where are they? I’m going to tell you the secret of finding delicious and various foods: Go to the NIGHT MARKET! Not only cheaper and a great variety of food (That’s the reason that I tell you to take those foods for lunch!) but also clothing, shoes, recreation, and supply can be found in the night market. Night markets provide cheaper but low-quality goods, but sometimes we can discover some funny or odd things there, so night market is still a great site for visiting or even killing time, especially the most famous one: Hua-Yuan Night Market(花園夜市). Except for the night market, there still some places for shopping, such as Zhong-Zeng Commercial Area(中正商圈), Bei-Men Commercial Area (北門商圈), are consisted of many shops and restaurants as well.

The pace of life in Tainan is peaceful and leisurely, so please slow down your pace to savor this city. The people in Tainan are also friendly and cordial, so don’t worry about losing your way or facing any other personal problems, for the locals will help you. It is a large curiosity that you only have to bring with you on travel. Just come and see, then you can acquire a totally fresh and new experience after a wonderful journey in TAINAN.

Ha there! Are you trying to explore Taipei city? I bet you are. If not, I bet you will be willing to do so. Then, you must have already heard of Yangmingshan. But do you really know the most amazing places in Yangmingshan and what’s special about them? If not, just follow my steps right now.

There are six national parks in Taiwan, and Yangmingshan National Park is one of them. Yangmingshan is different from the others because of its volcano landforms. In addition, it also has a lot of historical spots. In Yangmingshan, you can explore our semitropical ecology, study our historical heritages, and experience the hospitality of local people.

Semitropical ecology is one of the reasons why the conditions of different areas in Yangmingshan and in Taiwan varied so much. These varieties show in three ways: forests, animals, and our foods. Speaking of forests, for monsoon in winter, activities of volcanoes, and the big range of the temper, you can see semitropical rain forest, broad-leaved forest, and grasslands at areas of different height in the same mountain. For example, you can observe bamboos and awns on the same hill. As about animals, insects of one altitude are different from those of another altitude. Finally, when speaking of foods in Yangmingshan, I bet you will be amazed by the delicacies of products from the mountains. The foods change from season to season. In conclusion, Yangmingshan is a place being endowed with adequacy of natural resources.

The second thing that you can’t miss is the chance of visiting our historical personages. The two most famous spots in Yangmingshan are Yangmingshuwu and the Lin Yutang House. Yangmingshuwu, which has been called Chunghsing Residence, is the summer resort of the late President Chiang Kai-shek and his wife. By visiting this excavation, you can experience the early history of Taiwan. The second important spot is the Lin Yutang House. Lin was a writer and the first person in Taiwan who was famous for his English publication. A Leaf in The Storm, You-Bu-Wei-Jhai, Between Tears and Laughter, and the Pleasure of a Nonconformist are some of his famous works. To sum up, Yangmingshan is a place that treasures a lot of human histories.

I think you will ask: where and which to visit first if I could only stay for one or two days? That is not a problem. You can just go to Rock Garden and you will feel contended with your trip.

The final thing you should experience is our hospitality. If you want to have a delighted evening, it is suggested that you go to the hydrophilic restaurant-Rock Garden. There are three reasons that I like Rock Garden: the surroundings, the fresh and cool drinks, and the managers’ hospitality. The first reason that I like Rock Garden is the comfortable atmosphere of its environment. The managers of Rock Garden are a couple that are fond of getting closer to nature and environment buildings. As a result, they decided to build their ideal restaurant in a small valley that has three streams flowing together. Visitors can experience the fine scenery with hills and waters at the same time. In addition, the host is good at and fond of interior design and landscape gardening. That’s the reason that it is called garden, and it is also the one that I bet you’ll like. The second reason I like Rock Garden is the drinks that the hostess makes. The fruit vinegar juice is my favorite, because I could taste the sweet smell of fruit and the sour of vinegar in one cup of drink. It’s a perfect combination. Furthermore, green tea with honey is also a great choice. The third reason that I like Rock Garden so much is because of the hospitality of the host and hostess. For instance, they can design special food lists for each party they hold. It makes people feel unique and well treated. All in all, I commend Rock Garden as the best choice for all the reason I mentioned.

Yangmingshan is a place that you can experience Taiwan’s semitropical ecology, historical heritages, and the hospitality of local people no matter in which season and which way. I ensure everyone can find some memories that you will want to treasure forever in this mountain. In brief, don’t miss any chances to visit Yangmingshan when you visit Taiwan.

Hualien-The Wonderland

The place I want to introduce in Taiwan is Hualien. Because it’s my mother’s hometown, I have much more chances than others to connect with this beautiful place and to know it deeply. I can go there every summer vacation and my aunt lives there as a local guide, who can always looks after my family when we visit.
There are some characters which make Hualien so unusual. The features include the spectacular Cingshui Cliff ( 清水斷崖 ) and Taroko Gorge ( 太魯閣峽谷 ) in Taroko National Park ( 太魯閣國家公園 ) , Aboriginal Truku Culture ( 太魯閣族 ) , the delicious seafood which is fresh and cheap, and the sincere people who always make me feel so nice and warm.

Cingshui Cliff
The Cingshui Cliff is the first scene on my trip to Hualien. It’s on the way to the wonderland and it’s so beautiful that I always stop for a while to enjoy the view . It showed an unbelievable perpendicular .It seems impossible that the cliff can be formed naturally, but it is. The Cliff was caused by Eurasian Plate ( 歐亞大陸板塊 ) extruding with Philippine Plate ( 菲律賓海板塊 ) . And then, the wind eroded the top of the ground and let the marble appear. The marble is too solid to be eroded. So it can keep its shape as such an unbelievable perpendicular. Thank to the works of the God.

Taroko Gorge
Taroko Gorge is the place where you can not only enjoy the sight but also having the exciting game. Along the river, the magnificent and nearly vertical marble canyon is all around you. The most famous way to enjoy the scene is rowing the boat( 泛舟 ) in the Siouguluan River ( 秀姑巒溪 ). I did it once and I’ll never forget the experience. I got tanned, but I also got lots of fun.
Taroko Gorge was caused by the cooperation of the plate extruding and the wind eroding just similar as the Cingshui Cliff. But the Liwu Stream (立霧溪) did help cut the marble in the shape of the amazing right angle. The amazing cooperation makes the amazing scene.

Aboriginal Truku Culture
The Truku is the latest found aboriginal culture so far, because it’s so similar with the Atayal Culture ( 泰雅族 ) that people mistook them as the same thing for a long time. Both of the two tribes live in the mountain, hunt and plow for provisions, and take rainbow as the divinities bridge. However, they have totally different languages so they can’t communicate or cooperate at all even though they live nearby.
Truku’s dancing is so attractive to tourists because it’s not only a dancing but a heritage of its culture. Its handicrafts are so colorful, delicate, and lots kinds of patterns. That’s why I always linger in the souvenir department for a long time.

Seafood
Because of the great Geographical position, behind the route of the Kuroshio ( 黑潮 ), the fishermen can easily catch the seasonal fish. The Kuroshio bring the warm water from the tropical area to the frigid zone to warm its water, and make it more suitable for creatures to live in.
The seafood in Hualien is not only fresh but also in a really low price.I always eat as much seafood as I can in Hualien.

How to get there
Taipei → (Hsueh-shan Tunnel) → Ilan → Hualien
I suggest to drive there because Hualien is so big and the public transportation there isn’t as convenient as in Taipei. Also, the route sign is clear to understand and it’s easy to park cars in Hualien.

The people, the harmony atmosphere and the above-mentioned things comprise the sparkling Hualien. I think it will always be my favorite place in Taiwan. I wish that no matter what it was, what it is and what it will be, Hualien can always be a wonderland for everyone.

Danshui

If my American friend comes to Taiwan on vacation, I would strongly recommend him to spend one day strolling around Dansui, the waterfront town.

Located on the northern bank of the Danshui River, the old port town of Danshui is very popular with foreigners for its history and historical sites, and the harbor view at night.

Most of the activities in Danshui take place along the old wharf riverside. On weekends and at nights, there are many street musicians and entertainers playing light music and dancing to offer a carnival atmosphere.

Walk westward from the MRT station along the waterfront, and you will see a small lane, named Gong-ming lane, which is a typical Taiwanese night-market street, and there you can enjoy grilled seafood, hot fishball soup, fried stinky to-fu, and iron eggs.

Every time my friends and I go to Danshui, we would stay in several different little shops to taste some of these snacks. Of course, if you have much energy, you can go up to Fort San Domingo to admire sunset or learn about a brief history about English colonial period in Danshui.

Around dinner time, I know a restaurant called “Waterfront”, which I think is the best spot to view the sunset, and the great river spectacle. This fancy restaurant offers great dishes of Mediterranean style.

When you sit in the cozy sofa in the restaurant, you can feel the sea breeze blows across the riverside, and sunset descends in front of you, and the water flows along the wide river mouth.
The atmosphere there is as romantic and exotic as you might imagine. If you guys are lucky enough, you can also enjoy some excellent live band shows.

For example, one day last summer vacation, when I went there with some friends, we saw two singers playing the keyboard and the guitar and singing many soft, romantic love songs, which are just my most favorite songs. It was really an unforgettable night. The restaurant can be easily reached, just walk west along the waterfront for about 15 minutes, and you will see a huge old tree and a dolphin signpost, next to them is the Waterfornt restaurant.
The address is no.229-9,Zhong Zheng Road, right next to the Dansui police office.

After the delicious dinner, the Danshui’s giant ice-cream cone is a dessert you must taste; you can take the ice-cream cone with you and stroll around. They come in several flavors, ranging from sweet chocolate, vanilla, green tea to sour lemon.

In the night, the last important thing you can do to finish one day’s trip is to set off a few fireworks to light up the night sky.

Are you eager to follow my advice to pay a visit to this old waterfront town? Don’t hesitate! Just take MRT Dausui line, the cheapest transportation fare.

its playground, where I spent much

time with my family and took the most pictures! On the way, there

are plenty of trees on the sidewalk. Sometimes you will find squirrels

jumping between trees and climb down wondering if you bring some

special snacks for them. You will see how lovely they are! On holidays, the

playground is full of children’s laughter. The slides and swings are the hottest

entertainment facilities. Old as it looks, many children like it very much. When

I was little, I liked the swing the most. Feeling the warm wind passing by my

Which building is the tallest in Taiwan and was once in the whole world? Where can you have a feast for your eyes for the most splendid fireworks display when the moment you finish counting down of the year? Without a second thought we all know it is Taipei 101, a modern architecture combined with traditional notion and symbols.

What's unique about Taipei 101?

Well, the special architecture has a lot to offer. Its name features the idea of going one better on 100, and the number means perfection in Chinese tradition. Besides, take a closer look and you’ll find that the shape of its exterior appearance resembles a bamboo, signifying learning and growth. The bamboo-shaped building has eight segments, with eight floors in each. In Chinese culture, the number “eight” is often associated with abundance, prosperity, and good fortune.

The feeling you see Taipei 101 from a distant place is totally different from the feeling of standing just in front of it and lifting up your head to see its endless stretch. I remember the first time I looked up at what I thought to be a mysterious structure, I could say nothing but “wow” with emotion of marvel and amazement. Compared with 101, I was just like a grain of salt that was too tiny to be observed. Actually I could just have part of its image because it’s too high and, sometimes, surrounded by thick smog or cloud. Somehow I was still awestricken.

Since I was a student in senior high school which is near Taipei 101, I had plenty of chances to observe it every day while going to school and after class. It was during these three years that I found it has many patterns to display. Sometimes it would show special pictures for some specific festival. For example, I once saw red ribbon exhibited in red light on December 1st, the date which reminds people of showing love and care for those who have AIDS. And it would display “88” on outer wall on Fathers' Day for the purpose of celebrating this annual festival.

A red ribbon, the internationally recognized symbol of AIDS and"♥AIDS" are lighted on top of "Taipei 101" during a campaign for World AIDS Day in Taiwan.

Even on days that are not set for celebrations, the lights and decorations on this building change every evening. There are seven colors for each weekday, like red for Monday and orange for Tuesday. The lights would decorate the building until ten o' clock every day. Turning off the lights conveys the message that a hardworking day has ended.

We'll have more to expect, because this year the 89th-floor observatory will be open for people who want to enjoy themselves among thundering fireworks. The cost is NT700 dollars each person. After admiring unforgettable view, there will also be a chance to see the first gleams of morning from the top of Taipei 101 this year, with tickets sold NT800 dollars each.

Le-Hua Night Market

Le-Hua Night Market is a very popular and well-known place in Yung-He City. The night market is located on Yung-ping Road. It has nearly 320 shops and vendors, including food stands, restaurants, boutiques, clothing stores, and so on. If you want to taste various kinds of traditional foods in Taiwan, Le-Hua Night Market is just the place you should pay a visit to. Not only can it provide food you may have never tasted before, it also gives friendly atmosphere. Furthermore, it only takes 5 minutes by walking from MRT Dingxi Station to the night market. In this article, I’ll introduce some traditional and popular stores, and I promise you’ll like them! Now, let’s take a little food tour.

First of all, when coming to Le-Hua Night Market, one of the most important stores we cannot miss is the one selling oyster omelets. After taking a two-minute walk from the start of the night market, you’ll see it on the left side. It has been running for almost 30 years, and the ownership of it has been handed down to the second generation by the original shopkeeper. The store is special because it always uses fresh oysters, and the food is flavored with specific sauce made exclusively by the owners. Except the owners, no one knows how to make that particular sauce. The sauce is so delicious that some people even want to buy it. The store also uses sweet potato flour and water celery to substitute the flour and celery cabbage that other venders use, which will make the oyster omelets more savory. Don’t worry, the soup is mild so that it is suitable for everyone, even the pregnant and the sick can have the soup. It doesn’t smell weird; you can slightly smell the sweetness of the angelica duck instead! With the tenderness of duck meat and the elasticity of noodles, it will absolutely be a delicacy for you when visiting here.

After having so many things to eat, we may probably feel thirsty. If so, I cordially recommend a place for you to go. There is one store selling almond ice, which you can find out on the right side after walking through the only winding road in the night market. The reason why I would like to talk about this store is that it not only sells almond ice but also offers kinds of snacks made from almond, including tofu, cookies, ice-lollies, and so forth. The store mainly sells almond shaved ice and tofu. The ice they use is purely made of almond, which makes the shaved ice and mein mein ice so yummy. Needless to say, they are the most popular items ordered by visitors because of their frosty and velvety taste. What’s more, it also sells almond soft ice cream that other venders don’t have. Therefore, if you’re accustomed to the special smell of almond and want to have some tasty shaved ice or snacks, you shouldn’t miss this store!

A Masterpiece of Traditional Chinese Architecture

Lungshan Temple, was founded in 1738, consists of three halls: the fore hall, the main hall and the rear hall. With the destruction of the bombing during World War II, the whole temple was toppled. Thanks to Wang Yi-Shun, we have rebuilt a temple of art; and thanks to his perfect carving skills, the LungshanTemple has become one of the most impressive sites in Taiwan.
There are many pillars supporting the historic temple uprightly. These pillars are not made for ornaments, but there is nothing else that so splendidly ornaments a temple. On the original intentions of the masons, the pillars are made out of stones in an eye to protecting the stylobates from decayed. However, to build pillars without inscribing is like go out without dressing. So the masons started carving something served as the symbolization of joy, such as the magpies and the blossoms stands for “to look very happy.” It is hard to find these vivid and exquisite carvings in modern architecture. LungshanTemple preserves a heritage of ancient culture for future generations. Therefore, it is assigned a historical site of second grade by the government.

Without any sweat.I’m going to lead you to experience a tour of nature.
Hou-feng bikeway& dong-feng bike way are famous to many biking-lover.
However, even not a biking lover, It is still worthy to be visited!

The two bike way are connected. Totally the length is 16.5km, while it is not necessary that one should ride the whole route at once! There are many fabulous spot along the way. Each part has its distinguished features. Enable to let people enjoy the whole ridding. Also ,we can enjoy the beautiful sight along the bank of da-jia river. The entrance of hou-feng bikeway is located in hou-li town, near by another famous scenic spot hou-li horse farm.

The most famous part in the road is the 9th tunnel ,which is used to be using by
train.The tunnel is neitherwind nor very big .Just suitable for little train.Now, It’s suitable for two bikes ridding together.It is cool inside, the temperature is lower than outside. If you ride it in summer, it’s really comfortable.

The end of hou-feng bikeway is the beginning of dong-feng bikeway.

Dong-feng bikeway is the first bikeway that is constructed by a devastated railway in Taiwan. Dong-feng bike way was once called Dong-feng rail way, carrying wood and farm product. To many local people, it is a memory to their past life. Passing through Houli、Shi Gang、Dong-feng bikeway is longer than hou-feng bikeway ,while there are more spots in it, including Shi Gang reservoir and 921 memorial park-The place where government keep the shattered building and several broken rock(really big, taller than me! ).

If hungry, going on a picnic would be a good choice!

I went and had fun in the two bikeway with my friends in this summer vacation. I like biking but I don’t ride it often , therefore, I was afraid that I couldn’t finish the whole route, nevertheless , my friend told me that the only thing that I supposed to do is to enjoy the refreshing air、blue sky and all the things we meet in our journey. But actually, ridding bicycle in such a distance is not a easy thing. After several curve, I had felt a little tired. especially those up slopes always made me have the impulse to take a brake. But after a while, the beautiful views caught my sight, I forgot the tiredness, relishing in the speed and wind. It is unavoidable that we may face difficulties in our journey, but I realize that once there is up slopes, there will be down slope after while, and ridding the speedy down slopes part is my favorite time.

My favorite beverage shop－50嵐－Igarashi.

The tea shop in Taiwan I love the most is 「50嵐」.The first time I saw the shop was on the newspaper which introduces tasty drinks. Because I am a drinkaholic and the photos on the newspaper really attracted me, I went to buy one of the introduced beverage－grass jelly tea latte(仙草紅茶拿鐵). The grass jelly was really big! If you order the middle-size cup, the grass jelly would occupy seventy percent of the cup. The tea latte was not made of cream but fresh milk. It was healthier and tasted quite terrific. The big grass jelly made it even better! I was addicted to Igarashi after the first sip.
Besides the grass jelly tea latte, let me introduce more drinks I would like you to know! One of my favorite beverages is pudding tea latte. If you order the big-size cup of it, there will be TWO puddings in your drink! How wonderful! Though it will cost a little more, I just cannot help ordering it. Another drink that I like the most is also the popular beverage in Igarashi, the ice cream tea. There will be a big ball of vanilla ice cream with black tea in your cup. It tasted cool, and, what’s more, you can add pearl, bubble or coconut to your drink without any other cost! I also like the pearl tea latte. The pearl and bubble in 「50嵐」 are of good elasticity. You have to try it at least once in your life!
Furthermore, there are many gifts 「50嵐」 will give you as present. For example, cute and various kinds of magnet, table-calendar with special pattern and so on. What appeals to me much is that if you buy five cups of drinks, you will get one more cup for free! Without doubt, it is a nice bargain.
Though there are many merits of 「50嵐」, there are still some shortcomings, too. For instance, many people think that the price of the drinks in 「50嵐」 is a little too high. For me, what makes me upset about 「50嵐」 is the district-difference. In the nut shell, I think the beverage in Taichung tastes much better than the same beverage in Taipei. The size of cup in Taipei is smaller than it in Taichung. What’s worse, when the first time I bought pudding tea latte in Taipei, there was only ONE pudding in my drink with the same price as in Taichung. This experience made me vow not to go to 「50嵐」 in Taipei anymore.
Pronounced as “ Igarashi” ,50嵐 is one of the Japanese surnames. The word－arashi also means "storm" in Japanese. The first Igarashi was established in Tainan by Mr.馬瑞東 in 1994.Because of his efforts for many years, you can find Igarashi all over Taiwan.
Even though the original place of Igarashi is in Tainan, it is more popular in Taichung. Since the Igarashi has been established, it retains the spirit of "Service , Quality , Creativity". The storm of Igarashi sweep across Taiwan with kind service, superior quality and unique taste .
Igarashi's insistence on the control of the quality has always been it's persistence at any cost. Pearls or bubbles(波霸) that were not sold for over 3 hours or tea under the standard temperature will never appear on the counter of Igarashi. The shop puts emphasis on their on-the-moment hand-shaken drinks without any artificial flavorings. It provides specialty drinks everyday.
There are three main sale-strategies of Igarashi. First, the thing under the standard quality will never be sold. Second, they only serve the best beverage by the best materials and apparatus. Last but not least, to combine people with the same vision to operate a corporate career.
“Do you want the normal quantity of sugar and ice in your drink? ” The sentence is from the friendly clerk. He or she would ask you initiatively and politely. Every cup of beverage would be made to meet the demand of customer. Even if you do not want to put on more weight, Igarashi will give you unique drinks to let you enjoy the drink without worrying about fat. It is on-the-moment hand-shaken drinks that satisfy each customer.
That’s all my opinion about Igarashi. If you have never tried it before, take a try one day; if you are addicted to it just like me, let’s go to buy something to drink!

The Hometown of Lotus ─ Baihe

Baihe(白河), best-known for its nickname of “the hometown of lotus”, is a small town located in the northern part of Tainan County. Here, you can wander in the simple, rustic countryside, encountering surprisingly beautiful scenes that marvel you and soothe your tiring mind.
In spring, continuous showers spray on the lotus fields, then farmers commence planting the gorgeous lotuses. Beginning with breeding shoots, preparing soil, fertilizing, ridding insects, to irrigating, the process of cultivating these fascinating flowers are elaborate and time-consuming. Lotuses have thin stems which enable it to stretch out of the muddy field. However, the fragile stems can’t withstand strong wind of summer, the season when numerous typhoons devastate lotus farms, causing farmers who make a living by yielding lotuses suffer huge loss. The best time to appreciate lotuses is early morning; the flowers would bloom only this period. Yet, not to worry too much that you will miss the blossom of lotuses for getting up too late. There are different species of lotuses that blossom all day long.
Lotuses are plants with high value, i.e. every part of lotuses can be used. The roots, stems, leaves, flowers and seeds, can be magically turned into delicate lotus cuisine and lotus-related products, including shampoo, tea, cosmetics, and more. Thanks to the advantages of the perfect soil and water quality in Baihe, the taste of lotus seeds and root powder are extensively praised by all; it sells so well that the supply is often unable to meet the demand.
In order to attract more tourists, the local government has established many tourist trails, allowing every one to walk under a long line of trees like green tunnels. Enjoy yourself for both the fabulous roadside scenery and fresh air anytime! The biggest draw of the “green tunnels” is that you may be able to see the magnificent mountain ranges behind extensive lotus farms. Want to soothe your body in relaxing hot mud spring, which is one of a kind in this world? Want to learn about the Chinese tradition by visiting historic temples? Find it all here in this mountain and prepare to gawk at every little sight you see while meandering your way uphill. Guanzihling(關仔嶺) hot spring is one of the five most noted hot springs in Taiwan. What makes it a noteworthy travel spot is that the hot spring in Guanzihling is mud spring, which only exists in three places in the world. It is said that the mud spring contains slight radium, which has therapeutic value for treating skin allergy, alleviating stress, and improving your complexion. The geologic condition brings Baihe more than just hot mud springs. One must-see that will definitely marvel you is that fire and water coexist in the same space due to the above-mentioned.
Far away from the hustle and bustle of the urban life, you can experience the tranquility and serenity of the rural life. Also, the hospitality of the villagers can make you feel welcomed. The most difficult problem faced by this small agricultural country, like most country in Taiwan do, is the lack of manpower, finances, and social resources. Young people would move out of town in order to make a living and find chances to survive in big cities. What’s worse, the decrease of birth rate and more elders staying in such a small town put more obstruction to further establishment. Owing to the special features for tourisms of this beautiful town, it will transfer to a new type of town.
To get here, you can take a train, a passenger transport to Shinyin(新營), Jiayi(嘉義) or Houbi(後壁) train station. Then, catch a bus near the train station to Baihe. You will be welcomed to this town and will discover the idyllic atmosphere of “the hometown of lotus”--- Baihe.

Kaohsiung Cultural Center

Although Kaohsiung Cultural Center is not as spectacular as Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall, it is small and delicate. It has no wall around it; as a result, when you walk around it, even just pass by, you can easily see the beautiful scenery in it.

The Art Avenue, which is located outside of Kaohsiung Cultural Center, combines beautiful landscape and elegant public arts, creating a spectacular and qualified metropolitan living area with culture. Every Saturday evening from 4:00p.m~9:30p.m, there is a Kaohsiung Art Fair, many venders will gather and sell some delicate hand-made stuffs or other artistic productions.

The four sides of the Kaohsiung Cultural Center are lined with the Golden Shower Trees, which has tiny yellow flowers. Whenever the blossom season comes, the Cultural Center looks like it`s wearing a golden necklace made by the tiny flowers. There is a vast grass in front of the main building. You can play baseball, fly kites, picnic, dance, and enjoy the energetic atmosphere.

Usually, there are some outdoor concerts in the round square next to the grass at night, if you are tired from all-day work, you can come and let the great music fresh your mind.

Chih Teh Hall and Chih Shan Hall, which are in the inner part of the building, hold assemblies and large-scale artistic performances. The other building, Chih Mei Hall, hosts for painting display.
If you want to read some magazines, find a place to relax and get away from the over-hot sun at the same time? You can go to the library! It has a great collection of books, magazines, and essays as well. The fourth floor will sometimes have some special exhibitions, such as the exhibition of instruments or the history of rock music. There also has a small room providing a lot of CDs and DVDs for you to watch movies and dramas or listen to music. What’s more, they are all for free!!
Not far away from the Cultural Center is the famous Liou-he night market. You must go there and try some tasty Taiwanese snacks, such as stinky to-fu, Oyster omelet, Sweet and Sour Pork Ribs, Braised Beef with Rice, etc.

After a busy and harsh week, how would you like to spend your two-day weekend? Staying at home studying? Eating chips and watching TV? Sleeping until noon or afternoon or even all day? Or, having some fresh air? If your choice is to have some refreshing air, let me tell you a place you must try.
Hsinchuang Stadium Taipei County, the place I recommend that you go, is like a very big park. Located near the Hsinchuang City Hall, the stadium is not difficult to find. If you take the MRT, get off at the Xinpu station, and get out through the exit number five; then you will see many bus stops along the road. There are many buses going to the stadium, so just choose one, and jump on it!

Looking out the windows of the bus, you may soon find that the scenery outside become a little different. Narrow allies are replaced by big squares, and smoky factories are substituted by green trees. Now, we are approaching our destination, Hsinchuang Stadium. The stadium includes three main parts, the Gymnasium, the Athletic Field, and the Baseball Field. There are also a Tennis Court, a Dancing Classroom, a Children’s Playground, and a Inline-skating Lane surrounding the three main buildings.

Not only the various facilities but also the diverse landscapes in the stadium area are fascinating. There are many beautiful scenes in any possible corner through the whole area, so just walk easy in any district, and you will encounter many surprises that you even haven’t expected.

The “Landscape Lake” is one of the most popular spots, which always attracts many people and brings much fun to those who came and stayed. Along the shore, sparrows fly down to fight for the foods while the children happily scatter the foodstuffs around themselves, making a picture of the harmony between human being and the nature. In the benches around the lake, people enjoy their precious leisure time watching what’s now happening in front of them. It seems that the time is frozen, and no more rushes would appear again.

The “Sunshine Meadow” is another region I like very much. Just as it is named after the sunshine, the meadow looks like a green carpet with a layer of golden powder on it at some specific moments. The sun shines brightly and warmly, giving a hopeful image. Every thing seems so lovely and high-spirited that we can’t miss any. No matter it’s at dawn or in the afternoon, there are many people exercising Kung Fu, walking, playing with kids, singing together, or just sitting and chatting on the meadow. It is this place that everyone regards as his own yard, where a person can totally do what he wants to do. Try to lie on the grass, and you will see many kites fly. They fly higher and higher to the sky, taking away our worries from daily routines.

After having the relaxing time in the “green part” of the stadium, it’s a good choice to have or to watch a sport game now. In the stadium, the facilities are well-maintained. Choose a sport you like, and then you can have a great time awaking your sleeping body. Among the many facilities, the baseball field would be the most teeming one. Every time when there is a game, people come here from different places to cheer for their favorite team. Exciting crowds, busy vendors, studious players, and wonderful games, all these elements build up the kingdom of baseball. During the games, you will see the passion and energy of the Taiwanese. So, if you haven’t experienced the thrilling feeling of watching a baseball game in a spacious field with thousands of crazy fans, just come here, and you will want to come again.

The Ximen Red House

Located in the Ximending area of Taipei, the Red House Theater, often called the "Red Theater" or "Red Play House" in English, is a part of the shared memories of several generations of Taiwanese. It is a unique octangle-shaped building entirely built of red brick, so people gradually began referring to it as the "Octagon Market" or the "Red House." However, at the very beginning, the Red House Theater was not even a theater; it was a retail shopping center with the best selection of international goods in Taiwan. The theater’s location is outside of old Taipei’s West Gate, which was a neglected cemetery through the end of the Qing dynasty. No one had thought that today this building would be designated as a grade three historical building or hold such a special place in the memories of so many citizens.

During the Japanese occupation, the Octagon Market was Taiwan’s most fashionable shopping area. Some popular merchandise included milk candy, red been sweet bread, sushi, and other Japanese
foods. There were also handguns, telescopes, Japanese Warrior brand art supplies, toys, beer, and soft drinks. With such a great variety of products, not only the Japanese who enjoyed shopping here, but also Taiwanese who wish to see what the world had to offer would come here to buy imported goods. After it was rented by several Shanghainese and renamed the "Shanghai Gardens Theater", it became extremely popular producing performances like cross-talk(相聲), Shaohsing opera(紹興劇), and stage plays. Beginning in 1963, the Red House Theater began to show movies. At first the films were mostly black and white Hong Kong martial arts movies. These films were loved by young and old, and
received much support from their fans. Afterwards, the Red House began showing second-run domestic films and foreign films. The Ximending area has become more prosperous since then.

Nevertheless, the Red House later went through a downfallen period and was lack of repair for many years. Finally in 1997, it was designated as a grade three historic site and repair work began. And the reopened Red House we see today is not limited to a nostalgic but lifeless movie museum. lts first floor is an art exhibition space and gift shop, presenting a variety of cultural products, and providing the public with a host of alternative shopping selections. The café it runs provides a quiet and carefree atmosphere for exhausted pedestrians, the fragrant aroma of coffee can always be smelled.

Besides, there also holds periodical performances like cross-talks, traditional operas, stage plays, concerts, and so on. And the plaza around it supplies a good site for new designers to display their works and ideas.

The Red House has unique qualities, and its beauty, which survives the test of time, cannot be matched by contemporary buildings. It also has many stories about Taiwan, waiting to be heard. This place is a complete integration of ancient architectural wisdom and craftsmanship. In this lively place in which young people’s laughter is often heard, traditional and modern elements exist in harmony instead of contradiction, giving a sense that the younger generations passing on the traditional treasures and culture.

The Otaku culture in Taiwan
When it comes to Otaku culture, people may immediately think of a computer geek sitting in front of a terribly messy desk, searching free animations and cartoon pictures. A room filled with trash, comics, models, and many other items that indicate that this man has not been out for a long time. Indeed, a typical Otaku matches most descriptions, but is that all about Otaku culture?

Originated from Japanese, Otaku means” house” in the language. So it is not difficult to put the two things, a house and a never-going out person together. But in Japan, “Otaku” can also means” A person who excels in a specific area.” That is to say, someone who excels in gardening can be called a “gardening Otaku”. And a person may be called a “spelling Otaku” after winning the spelling contest. And in the ACG (animations, comics, games) field, of course, is the most well known type. As everyone knows, Japanese culture has a great influence on Taiwan. Every year the island imports numerous cargos from Japan. And Japan, without doubt, had successfully sold itself to not only Taiwan, but the whole world.

Since ACG field is the most recognizable feature of a Otaku, then where can a Otaku gain ACG resources? Of course, the Internet is the largest information provider. Otakus often spend a great sum of time staying in front of computer. They download comics and videos easily in this way. (No matter legal or illegal). For they spend their money in other items. Internet also allows those who have the same interests gather together and discuss about their similar topic, this contribute to the foundation of some internet club or website. Then how about other Otaku essential materials? In Taipei, Ximen is the most distinguished area in Otaku groups. The Ximen area is nearly fashion itself. There is on surprise Otakus can find their paradise here.

Another distinctive feature of Otaku is that Otakus are not social or even not talkative. Due to staying in a specific area constantly, Otakus are tending to live in his or her world, instead of going out and stay with people. Indeed, this has caused some problem. Psychological damages, body weakening and Korashi(die of over working). They all do numerous side effects on every social aspect.

The formation of Otaku culture is merely a reflection on our society. Although being a normal circumstance, most islanders still look down on those who show interest in ACG fields. Mostly because of the lack of knowledge and sensational reports written by unrealistic media. The situation even worsens when politicians start arguing about unnecessarily issue about Japan. Local conceptions also make things more difficult. People are so easily infected by the outer world that they often ignore ones humanity. There are plenty of elites around us that have found their interest in ACG field. You may not know that even Taro Aso, the prime minister of Japan, loves spending his leisure time watching animations! It proves that Otaku culture should not be seen as abnormal. All should learn to show respect to unfamiliar culture and develop ones own view point.

If the answer is yes, I will recommend you visit Wen-Hsin Forest Park which is located in Nantun(南屯) District, in southwest of Taichung City. At this point of time, I will spare no efforts to introduce this new scenic spot to you. In this way, you may draw the park from my description.
Wen-Hsin Forest Park, covering an area of 8.86 hectares, was built in 2006. As soon as the construction was finished, it began to provide an oasis for people to refresh themselves. I’m not overstating. While journeying in nature becomes an extravagant wish for urban residents, this park provides us a paradise to purify our soul. It is an indisputable fact that this park can be viewed as the biggest green fields of Taichung City, and regarded as an urban forest as well as a green bank. In addition, the great diversity of plants in this park can never be neglected. Every time I visited there, the beauties of nature always carried me away. All the gain and loss in life, laughter and tears, were forgotten for the enchanting scene.
Around the edge of the park is a path where you can take a stroll and let your thoughts roam freely in the same time. If you want to ride a bicycle, there are winding trails that can lead you to curve through the green fairyland. Then, you may hear a piece of beautiful music, and be attracted to the Fulfillment Amphitheatre, which lies in the center of the park. Free concerts will be held in the amphitheatre from time to time, and the melodies can always touch the string in your deep heart. While wondering in Wen-Hsin Forest Park, I felt no longer pinned down at my desk or burdened with endless routine toil. It is the very valuable pleasure I’ve got from the jaunt to this park.
If you want to experience something thrilling, take the skating rink into consideration. There are many skillful skaters practicing stunts every now and then. You can learn some special skills from them. Or, for those who are unable to skate, just admire and marvel at what they have done in the auditorium. You may find it the same exciting to bang the drum for players. As for me, I’m fond of the hectic ambiance and the content of shouting myself hoarse. I take it as a decent outlet for the overflowing stress and brimming emotions in my mind.
Taichung has boasted a cultural city in Taiwan. As a result, there is a rich variety of institutions and constructions which are soil for culture. And Wen-Hsin Forest Park is the most prospective one. The local government plans to make this forest park the most grand outdoor music performance place in Taiwan. The capacity of the Fulfillment Amphitheatre will reach to 3000 people, which is far beyond the capacity of Da-an(大安) Forest Park’s 1000 people. As a result, Wen-Hsin Forest Park will become the promising landmark of Taichung, for it’s cultural temperament and atmosphere.

Miramar

Miramar, a famous sightseeing spot in Taipei, is the place I want to introduce. The most special thing of this department store is the Ferris Wheel. It is the first department store which has the Ferris wheel (it can also be called sky wheel) in Taiwan. Not only this, Miramar also has everything what others department stores have, such as cinema, food court, coffee shops, restaurants, and of course, the sales department.
Miramar is a well-known spot because of its Ferris wheel. It is such a romantic place that many couples like to have a date there, especially at night. The Ferris wheel will be more beautiful at night than in the day because of the light. But of course, you can have different feeling when you go to the Ferris wheel in the day. If you want, you can try both!
But be aware that there will be a lot of people when you come to Miramar during the weekend, and of course, you will have to stand in a long line just for taking the Ferris wheel. To keep off this matter, I suggest you to come to Miramar on weekdays, so that you can truly enjoy yourselves!
Just near by the Ferris wheel, there is the carousel. This is really different from the other department stores! The carousel here not offers facilities not only for children, but also for couples who want to experience romantic atmosphere or just want to recapture the mood when they were still unmarried.
And I am going to recommend some good restaurants around here to you. For example, Five-Dime (Chinese called五角船板), a very special restaurant just near by the Miramar. It has a distinctive appearance, particular the design. And the food here is also really good!
On the other hand, if you want to have a big meal in the Miramar, I suggest that you can go to Vicky’s Steak House(Chinese called美琪牛排館). The food there is exquisite, and the greatest thing is that you can enjoy the beautiful view of Ferris wheel while having the meal.
If you think Miramar only has Ferris wheel and nice restaurants, you are completely wrong! To be a department store, just as others, Miramar has a lot of fantastic shops, shop for sport like NIKE, ADIDAS…; store for woman such as CHICA, V_K…; counters of Cosmetics as ESTEE LAUDER, L'OCCITANE, ANNA SUI and so on …can also be found in Miramar! The thing it sold from clothing to kitchenware; it has almost everything you want!
The shop I’d like to recommend is agnes' b. I love the design of this brand, especially the BIJOUX and FEMME. Next time when coming to Miramar, you must visit this shop!
And if you want to see the movie, it would not be impossible in Miramar. There is an excellent cinema; it’s not only the normal one but also IMAX theater. Go and experience the fascination of IMAX theater, then you will feel like the story of movie just happen in front of you!
If you have children, do not worry, just bring them here. Children can enjoy themselves in Tom’s World (湯姆熊). It is a place prepared for children. And Miramar also has lots of shops that only for children: dressing, toys, hair salon and anything that you can image.
The way to get here is convenient. Though the MRT station here is not finish yet, you can take the free shuttle bus to Miramar at MRT Jiantan station. Or you can take bus 72, 247, 287, 222, 286, 208, 33, R2, 267…to the stop “Miramar” to get here!

Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall

Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall is a special sightseeing place in Taipei. Chiang Kai-Shek was an important person in Taiwan’s history. Actually, he was not the first president of the Republic of China (R.O.C.), but he was the first president to rule in Taiwan. He had held the power for 27 years, from 1948 to 1975. At the same year, 1975, he died. And this memorial hall was established to commemorate him.

In front of the arched door, there is a wide square where you can always see a lot of pigeons eating or walking there.

Passing through the arched door, you will see three special buildings in the memorial park:

The one on your left-hand side is called National Concert Hall. Many famous musicians and orchestras including Domingo and Pavarotti have held their concerts here.

Another building that is on your right-hand side is our National Theater. It’s a place for performers to act or dance. The most famous dancing group in Taiwan called Cloud Gate Dance Theatre usually take this theater as their first choice when they have a new play to make known to the public.

In the middle of these two buildings is another square where people often skate, dance, fly a kite, play Frisbee or even practice martial arts.

The third building is in the middle of the square. It's a white building with blue roof. If you go up the stairs, you will see a statue sitting there, and he is Chiang Kai-Shek. People in Taiwan set up this building and the statue to show our respect to Mr. Chiang. There are five display rooms inside the building which broadcasting the story and the pictures of Chiang Kai-Shek. But, the display rooms are not open all the time. Remember to check the website and get in touch with the person in charge if you want to visit. If you want to see something special, then, don’t miss the military police show. The military police team will give a show on the hour.
In addition to the three buildings, there are two ponds on each side. They are Yunhan and Guanghua Ponds. You can see a lot of fish and turtles in the ponds. And, there are artificial mountains, man-made waterfalls, and small bridges with a brook underlying creating a wonderful Chinese scene.
Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall is really a place that worth visiting. It’s a place that contains both natural scenery and historic significance. If you want to have a leisure afternoon in this busy Taipei city, you can just bring some toast here, and feed the pigeons. Or you can take a walk inside the park, enjoying the smooth breeze until the stars start to sparkle. Remember, the night view of Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall is even more attractive.

Xin Yi Commerce District

I would like to share my private spots with you which actually are also some famous landmarks for tourism in Taipei. Xin Yi Commerce District approximately includes Taipei101, Shin Kong Mitsukoshi department store, Vieshow cinemas, New York New York shopping mall, Neo19, and many fancy restaurants.

For convenience, you can just take the blue line of Taipei MRT to Taipei City Hall station. Walk out the MRT station and you'll find yourself surrounded by lots of tall buildings. This is what Xin Yi Commerce District brings to us --- feeling of “a city”.

No doubt, the district is a shopping paradise for those the rich. But what I think it features is the night view itself. Maybe you'll say that the night of such a bustling and flourishing area is not special at all; it's just be filled with colorful lights and ornaments. But in my point of view, Xin Yi Commerce District has more than its neon. For example, you can see the “Mobile Art” at the pavement of Vieshow cinemas which indicates something very interesting among modern people and this is in fact a good performance for everyone to appreciate and to think about.

The overhead bridge is a creative design, too. It definitely creates a good space for costumers to avoid being exposed to the sun and rain. It not only provides convenience to customers between these shopping malls, but represents the vitality of this city. The people bustling with activities reflect the splendid light on the bridge, and that's so attractive. Sometimes you can slow down your step and stand still right on the bridge and gaze at the view as far as you can. I think that's the most special way to feel something different within Xin Yi Commerce District. Although the surrounding is kind of noisy, at the moment you can just watch the cars, people, lights and so on.

To pursue the view from a higher position, you can also buy a ticket, go up to the eighty-ninth floor of Taipei 101, and have a bird's eye view of the whole Taipei!

Xin Yi Commerce District is also famous for its fancy restaurants, but actually I rarely eat at them. My impressive experience was to eat at “AZABUSABO TOKYO”, which we call” ma bu cha fang”(麻布茶房) in Chinese. I like the hot sweet potatoes with vanilla ice cream and “Matcha sauce” (抹茶醬) The texture of this dessert has many layers and it costs one hundred and forty five NT. The restaurant is on the second floor of Neo19.

Put shopping and eating aside, I consider Xin Yi Commerce District as an area to let yourself enjoy being in a city. Many people regard a big city, especially the capital, as a cold and detached castle. In their point of view, Taipei seems to be very ugly where everyone is always pursuing fame and wealth but never pay attention to people’s emotions. But seeing the beautiful city with a different angle, you will find that Taipei is full of passion, too. Take Xin Yi Commerce District for example, it releases both commercial and cultural energy of Taipei. You can say that all the styles of these buildings and the lights of these spaces are several kinds of city art. They indicate the local people here are abundant with thriving life and are always willing to accept new things. I can't deny that people in this area must go for fame and wealth, but I will consider it as a part of their culture and it has nothing to do with good or bad.

That's why I choose Xin Yi Commerce District as my private spot to share. I think this is a place that serves different feelings that vary from person to person. To gain your own perspective, you should discard prejudice and experience it on your own. Something very interesting is that although this is a fancy area, you don't have to be rich to experience it. The atmosphere is priceless, and so is your sincere smile.
